2 Signs of a Failing AC Fan Motor and the Preliminary Steps to Take

If you have an air conditioner in your home, you have one of the appliances any homeowner would want to have. However, it's still possible that you don't understand all its components and inner workings. In some cases, some homeowners don't even care to know how their air conditioning unit functions. All they care about is that the AC unit cools their home by producing refreshing cold air when they need it. But this shouldn't be the case.

As a homeowner, you need to know how the AC system works and perhaps learn a few of its components. The fan motor is, of course, among the critical components of your air conditioner. When it fails, you either suffer weak airflow or get no cool air at all. Luckily, you will always notice something indicating that the fan motor is failing and contact an air conditioning repair expert for help. Here's how you know the fan motor isn't in good working order.

The Fan Fails to Start

When the fan motor is damaged or failing, it will not start even when the air conditioner is turned on. As the air conditioner runs, the fan should circulate air in the house. But if the AC system is running and the fan isn't working, the evaporator coils are likely to freeze over. If you don't get the problem fixed as soon as possible, the air conditioner might suffer serious damage. So if the fan isn't working even when the AC is on, turn it off and contact an air conditioning repair technician right away.

The Fan Runs Even When the AC System Is Shut Off

Your AC unit will sometimes behave differently. For instance, the fan may continue running even after the AC unit has been turned off. The thermostat is sometimes to blame for this problem but not always. You may replace the thermostat to fix the problem. But if this doesn't solve the problem, then the electrical circuit could be the main culprit.

In most cases, the electrical circuit in your AC unit is closed and opened by relays. So when a relay is stuck, the circuit will remain closed. This means the electrical power will be relayed to the motor, causing it to run continuously even after turning off the air conditioner. Fortunately, an expert in air conditioning repair services will work on the fan motor and make it functional again.

Dealing with a faulty or failing AC fan motor is never a DIY task. So if the motor fan is failing, contact an air conditioning repair professional to check if they should repair or replace it. By so doing, the AC unit will be functional and reliable again.
